HOOKER — Hooker’s Kyra Cathcart scored 22 points and Mariana Cervantes added 18 — both nearly out-scoring the entire Texhoma team — as the Lady Bulldogs rolled up win No. 12, 62-25 over Texhoma on Tuesday night in The Dog House.
Cathcart and Cervantes did most of their damage in the paint as Hooker’s perimeter shooters were just a little off.
“We just played really well, we moved the ball well,” said Hooker head coach Ray Kennedy, whose Lady Bulldogs are 12-2 and ranked 13th in the latest OSSAA Class 2A poll. “They’re capable of (shooting threes), we didn’t shoot great outside.”
The game looked like it would end up like the last time these two teams met (a close win at Texhoma for the Lady Dogs), as No. 20 (Class A) Texhoma (8-4) held the lead 6-4 early in the fourth behind Braelyn Beattie, Tabra Elliott and Taysi Peterson.
But Hooker ended the period on a 8-0 run thanks to Cervantes, two free throws by Cathcart and a shot by Shania Miller for a 12-6 Hooker advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Dogs increased their lead to 14-6 and 16-8 nefore Texhoma made a quick run., pulling to within 4 behind Peterson and Sarah Murphy. But Hooker ended the second quarter strong with a 15-0 run, mostly thanks to Cervantes and Cathcart, with Jessica Ugarte adding a basket, as well, for a 31-12 halftime lead.
Hooker increased it lead to 36-12 before Texhoma scored again. But the Lady Dogs would outscore Texhoma 16-5 in the third quarter before pulling away for the win.
Miller added 8 for Hooker, which will be back home Friday night against Class B Laverne.
Beattie led Texhoma with 7 points.
