HOOKER, Okla.—It was a happy homecoming night for the Hooker Lady Bulldogs as they built a 20-point first half lead, and coasted to a 67-48 victory over the Laverne Lady Tigers.

2013 homecoming queen Kyra Cathcart scored 24, and 2014 homecoming queen Mariana Cervantes added 21 for the Lady Bulldogs. Shania Miller also reached double figures with 14.

Hooker struggled early in the game at the offensive end, trying to force the ball into the post against Laverne’s tight zone with little ball movement. Meanwhile Laverne struggled to hit shots of any kind.

But with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and the score knotted at four, Hooker started to roll. Naomi Rodriguez got a steal and an easy layup to get the Lady Bulldogs going.

Hooker began to move the ball around the perimeter and find open passing lanes to the post, and went on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to go up 17-4.

Foul trouble started to plague the Lady Tigers as Hooker entered the bonus with 6:01 left in the half. Hooker went 10 of 11 at the line in the first half, and Laverne finished the half with four girls in foul trouble.

Hooker finished the final six minutes with a 15-8 advantage to go up by 20, 32-12.

The Lady Bulldogs largest lead was 27 after back-to-back buckets by Cathcart made the score 43-16 with 4:05 left.

Then Laverne got hot, hitting six threes over the next six minutes, and finished the game 9 of 22 from beyond the arc.

“We did a lot of good things, but I was disappointed with our lack of communication,” Lady Bulldogs coach Ray Kennedy said. “It looks like we’re really going to put the game out of reach and we don’t guard the perimeter. We played too good of defense to give that up. Too many one pass and shoot and open three.”

But the Lady Tigers could not make up any significant ground as Hooker continued to push the ball inside to their two queens.

Cathcart finished 9 of 16 from the field, 6-8 at the line, and with 11 rebounds. Cervantes was 6 of 15 with 6 boards, and was 9-13 at the free throw line. Shania Miller was 7 of 7 inside the arc and had five assists as did Rodriguez.

Hooker was 23-47 from 2-point range, 1-11 from 3-point, and 18-28 at the line. Laverne was 10-33 inside the arc, and 6-6 at the line.
