When a five-seed matches up with a four-seed, it generally is a battle between two evenly matched teams.
But Tuesday’s game was a lopsided battle, and the fifth-seeded Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs dominated Elkhart Lady Wildcats 51-23 to advance to the semi-finals of the Hi-Plains League Tournament.
The Lady Mustang defense was the key. Heights made every possession difficult for Elkhart in the first quarter, and the Lady Wildcats only managed two points in the first eight minutes.
During the same stretch, Heights managed to score 11 and extended to a 19-7 lead at half.
The Lady Mustangs continued to outpace the Lady Wildcats in the third with a 15-5 advantage.
Elkhart was able to reach double digits in a quarter for the first time in the fourth, but it was too little, too late, and the Lady Mustangs rolled to 51-23 win.
Nayelly LaPoint led the Lady Mustangs with 16 points. Ivon Amparan added 10. A total of nine Lady Mustangs scored in the game.
The win advanced Heights (5-5) into a semi-final match against top-seeded Cimarron (9-1).
Cimarron advanced with a 71-42 win over Lakin.
Height and Cimarron will face off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Garden City Community College.
