FORGAN, Okla.- The Turpin Lady Cardinals scored 15 points in the first 11 minutes of the game and looked poised to give the Forgan Lady Bulldogs a run for their money. But over the game's final 21 minutes the Lady Cardinals only managed two points as Forgan ran away with a 42-17 romp.
Early in the game Turpin controlled the boards, and was able to get plenty of second and third chance shots. This kept the game close with the lead changing hands five times in the first quarter. Another rebound and putback by Ashley Funk with just six seconds left in the first quarter got Turpin within two by the end of the first quarter (13-11).
Funk had eight points in the first quarter, but that was the end of her scoring for the night.
Hanna Weber hit a jumper with 5:14 left in the half. It would be another eight minutes before the Lady Cardinals would score again.
Forgan's scoring stayed limited in the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs led 21-15 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs came out a different team in the second half. Turpin no longer dominated the boards as Forgan began to enforce their will at the defensive end, and limit Turpin's opportunities.
"That was the key," Lady Bulldogs coach Brett Trippet said. "It didn't matter zone or man we were not getting the block out and they were getting 3-4 shots and getting one to go or getting a foul. In the second half we got those block outs and limited their shots. Then we got things going offensively a little to put the game away."
Forgan did a lot of their damage in the second half at the free throw line, going 12 of 18.
Meanwhile Turpin scored their last basket of the game with 5:52 left in the third quarter, finishing the game with a scoreless streak just seconds short of 14 minutes.
Forgan finished the game shooting only 24 percent from the field, while Turpin shot 26 percent. But Forgan almost had twice as many attempts (50-26).
Forgan forced Turpin into 30 turnovers that limited their offensive opportunities and gave the Lady Bulldogs points in transition and trips to the charity stripe.
Homecoming queen KaDawn McReynolds led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points, including 6 of 8 shooting at the free throw line. Alex McBee and Nikki Taylor each added 8.
For Turpin it was Ashley Funk with 8, and Hanna Weber with 7.
Both schools turned right around and played again Saturday. Forgan traveled to Arnett. Turpin hosted Shattuck for homecoming.
