The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs hit seven threes to pick a critical win for Sub-State standings over the Stanton County Lady Trojans Friday night, 51-37.
Heights took an early 9-6 lead, and outscored the Lady Trojans 12-10 in the second quarter to take a 21-16 halftime lead.
The Lady Mustangs took complete command of the game with their best offensive quarter in the third. Heights outscored Stanton County 19-11 to go up by 13 (40-27) heading into the final stanza.
Heights maintained in the fourth to win by 14.
Heights was 20 of 43 from the field and shot 41 percent from beyond the arc.
Nayelley LaPoint led the Lady Mustangs with 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including a pair of threes. She also nabbed three steals. Ivon Amparan was 6 of 9 with a pair of threes for 14 points. Jackie Loya scored 10, including a pair of threes, and grabbed 8 rebounds.
Heights (8-7) will travel to Beaver (14-7) Monday where two coaching legends Barry Mellen and Casey Jones, who have combined to win almost 1,200 games, will face off against each other one more time before Mellen’s retirement at the end of the season.
