South’s seventh graders have to question the odds.
At this point, the Apaches have been competitive in virtually every game but have very little to show for it.
At some point, it would seem, South is due to win a close one.
During a rare Saturday game against Hugoton, the Apaches suffered another close loss, this time to Hugoton, 35-33.
The Apaches pushed the ball inside to Matthew Hernandez who was able to score a basket or get fouled. Hernandez scored five of South’s 10 first quarter points, and the Apaches had a slim 10-8 lead.
By halftime, the Apaches had a 21-17 lead, but Hugoton cut the lead to one by the fourth quarter.
Hugoton outscored the Apaches 8-5 in the final period, and South missed five free throws in the fourth quarter in the loss.
South ended the day shooting 11-of-21 from the free throw line.
Hernandez led the Apaches with 13 points. John Aung added nine, and Jaime Torres had five.
