When Seward’s second half lead disappeared Saturday night against Independence after an 18-2 Pirate run put Seward in a 48-39 hole, the Saints needed someone to step up.

That leader was Moses — Thijen Moses — and he led his Saints to the Promised Land, a 93-87 overtime win in dramatic fashion.

When the Saints were down by nine, Moses reeled off 10 points including two three pointers in three minutes to narrow the gap to two.

He scored 17 of his 20 points in the final 15 minutes of regulation to give the Saints a fighting chance.

“Thijen is a very experienced player,” Seward coach Bryan Zollinger said. “He played at a high level in high school and AAU and at DePaul. He’s not afraid to take big shots.”

The Saints were struggling to find a go-to guy when the game was on the line.

This was the first game all season where the Saints needed to rally.

The first five games were blowouts.

But a half court trap by Independence caused the Saints problems early in the second half, and the Saints committed an uncharacteristic 31 turnovers in the game.

That’s when Moses sparked a comeback.

Marquez Patterson also contributed seven points down the stretch, but it was Moses who was able to swing momentum from the Pirates to the Saints at critical moments.

Seward will play Labette at Independence Friday before the rematch with Independence on the road Saturday.
