FORGAN, Okla.- KaDawn McReynolds and Nikki Taylor drained back-toback deep threes midway through the third quarter during a Lady Bulldogs 12-1 rally that gave Forgan the cushion they needed to defeat the Tyrone Lady Bobcats for the district championship, 46-31.
Taylor finished the game with a game-high 14, and McReynolds scored 12, including three 3-pointers. Alex McBee also reached double-figures with 11.
Tyrone started the game well as Alondra Aviles and Rayna Wall each scored twice in the first four minutes to put the Lady Bobcats up 9-3.
Tyrone still led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but by the end of an 11-1 rally they trailed 14-10.
In fact, Forgan’s 11-1 rally turned into an 18-4 run that put the Lady Bulldogs up 21-13 at half.
“I wish we would have gotten off to a better start, but after that we played pretty good,” Lady Bulldogs coach Brent Trippet said. “We didn’t play great offensively, but our defense kept us in good shape, still too many turnovers.”
Tyrone scored the first four of the second half, cutting the Lady Bulldogs lead back to just four.
But then the key 12-1 rally by Forgan put the Lady Bulldogs up by 15 with less than a minute left in the third.
“We started the game the way we wanted to and made them shoot the shots we wanted them too,” Lady Bobcats coach Clay Witt said. “They hit a couple of NBA-depth threes and that widened it out.”
Tyrone cut the lead back to 10 when Aviles hit her second three with 4:30 left in the game, but could get no closer.
“Our pressure defense helped us late, but we just couldn’t hit enough shots to get back in it,” Witt said. “I was proud of the way the girls hung in there.”
Both teams advance to the regional tournament. Forgan will be at No.6 Shattuck in the winner’s bracket Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Tyrone will take on Waynoka at Shattuck Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
