FORGAN, Okla. — The Forgan Bulldogs took down the Tyrone Bobcats 73-31 for the district championship Saturday night, and in doing so reached several milestones.
The win was the 50th consecutive home win (last loss was Feb. 2, 2008) and the 20th straight district championship.
“We don’t ever take for granted what it takes to compete and win,” Bulldogs coach Todd Kerr said. “They scrapped with us and battled with us, but we made enough plays to win the game.”
Forgan’s Trevin Lopez opened the game with a three-pointer on the Bulldogs opening possession, and the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-3 lead.
By the end of the first Forgan led 20-8.
Midway through the second quarter the Bulldogs pushed their lead up to 21 (34-13), and led 42-19 at the half.
“I thought started the game with the right tempo, a low tempo, but by the second quarter they were playing at their pace,” Bobcats coach Clay Witt said. “Young guys not understanding how much pressure they bring.”
But where the Bulldogs really put the game away was in the third quarter.
Forgan scored the first 10 of the half, and outscored the Bobcats 16-2 in the third quarter. Most of their points were layups after steals.
“I spent the whole halftime complaining about the way we rotated on defense, and were not where we needed to be,” Kerr said. “We gave them about 8-10 points in the first half because we weren’t where we needed to be when we rotated in our traps. We really concentrated on our defense in the second half and then the game got away from them.”
Nine of the ten players scored for Forgan. Trevin Lopez scored 15, Jace Kerr 13, Demetrius Alston 11, Luis Ordonez 9, and David Stout 8.
For Tyrone it was Ethan Reece with 11 and Ty Harvey with 9.
Forgan will take on Waynoka at Shattuck Thursday in the first round of the regional tournament at 8 p.m.
Tyrone will take on the host, Shattuck, in an elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m.
