MERRITT, Okla. — John Godfrey nailed a 3-pointer less than a minute into Saturday’s district championship contest at Merritt High School, tying the game at 3. But that would be the only time the Bulldogs were tied, as the Merritt Oilers captured the Area 1 Class 2A District 5 championship with a 65-32 win over the Bulldogs.
Godfrey ended up as the leading scorer for Hooker with 13 points as No. 9 Merritt led just 13-8 in the first quarter after another Godfrey basket swished in. But the Oilers would go on a 30-6 run — including an 18-1 spurt from midway through the first into the second quarter — to take a 31-8 lead midway through the second and a 43-14 lead at halftime.
Dayton Metcalf added 10 points for Hooker, Alex Juarez 3, Jesus Garcia and Hutton Parsons 2 each, Dakotah McBride — who got in early foul trouble) scored 1.
Hooker (5-16 overall) will play in the regional consolation bracket at 3 p.m. Thursday against District 8 runner-up Mangum, which lost 43-33 to Sayre on Saturday at Sayre. The game will take place at Burns Flat-Dill City
