Three MacArthur students keep their eye on the balll...er pancake as they flip the flapjack as many times as possible in the Pancake Challenge Friday between that school and Garfield Elementary.

LEFT: A fellow MacArthur student uses extreme concentration to keep the pancake in the skillet. RIGHT: MacArthur staffers give it their best shot in that portion of the competition. There were three phases to the challenge. The contest started with students flipping pancakes, followed by teachers doing the same. Total number of flips were counted in each category and then compared to those of Garfield. Staffers then competed in an eating contest in which they had to eat two pancakes as fast as possible. MacArthur’s fastest time was just a little more than 20 seconds, with Garfield’s fastest eater coming in at about 27 seconds. That victory, along with wins in both of the flipping categories, gave a sweep to MacArthur, bringing the Traveling Trophy back to the north Liberal school after Garfield won the contest last year. L&T photos by Robert Pierce
