L&T staff report

Liberal’s basketball season came to an end Wednesday in the first round of Sub-State after a 64-32 loss to Maize South.

The Redskins struggled late in the regular season, losing five of the final six games.

Liberal fell behind early in the Sub-State game and never found a way to slow down the Mavericks.

The No. 8 Mavericks held the Redskin offense to three points early and jumped out to a 27-3 lead.

Liberal responded by outscoring Maize South 17-13 the rest of the half, but Liberal still trailed 40-21 at the break.

Liberal continued to make a run and outscored the Mavericks 9-2 to start the second half, but a technical foul shifted the momentum, and the Redskins only scored tow points after the technical the rest of the game.

Maize South used the free throw line to dominate the Redskins. The Mavericks converted on 34 of 42 free throw attempts.

Liberal only went to the line 10 times and made only three of them.

Nolan Larkin led the Redskins with eight points.

The Redskins ended their first season under Scott Hinkle with a 6-15 record.
