The time is approaching rapidly. It is less than two months until we will be voting on the bond issue and 1-cent sales tax for the school construction and renovations in Liberal.
The voting public has been given every opportunity to learn what the plans are, and as far as that goes, even had the opportunity to help determine how the4 money will be spent.
USD 480 has gone to great lengths to inform the public of both the plans for building and the probable plans for school buildings that will no longer be used. They have also given us a every clear understanding of the needs we are facing.
The last time voters went to the polls to solve the overcrowding and other problems with our school buildings, I don’t believe this much information was put out. It seems to me, most of the information then was focused on the needs of Redskin Field. I’m pretty sure almost everyone remembers how that played out – with the election failing and yet the Redskin Field renovations occurred anyway.
Since that time, a large number of voters have had little to no trust in our board of education. Our current BOE members have been dealing with that issue.
With all of the information that has come out through the newspaper and meetings, it’s hard to imagine that there is anyone who cannot see the needs we have. It’s also great to have the assistance of the state to finance this endeavor should we do it now.
My question is, how many more tax hikes are we going to take in the near future? We’ve had our city, county and school mill levies raised this year. We’ve approved another 10 years of the 1-cent sales tax and will add another half-cent to the sales tax if we pass this school bond election. Recently, the Seward County Community College Board has been talking about building.
I agree that our students need us to pass this, however, I’d like to see an end to the spending for awhile. Is the college going to be able to build without the taxpayers having the opportunity to vote on it? Would USD 480 look for some areas to cut expenses instead of hiking our mill levy when they want to add more coaches or non-teaching personnel?
I’m asking for an answer. Does anybody have one?
