“Giving back to the communities we serve is a part of Southern Pioneer Electric Company’s business plan,” said SPE’s H.U.G.S team member, Mendy Wakefield. “Our employees live, work and raise families in the same communities as our consumers; we have a vested interest in developing our communities to be strong and viable for years to come.

“Two years ago, the H.U.G.S (Helping Us Give to Society) team was formed to do just that – give back to the communities we serve. The H.U.G.S team is proud to announce the completion of another project,” she said.

Archery is a sport that seems to be growing in popularity especially in the Liberal area. Flatlanders Archery Club in Liberal has been drawing in members from all over the western half of Kansas and the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle. Membership has nearly doubled in the past year with an almost even number of men and women. Club members meet up in various locations for practice shoots and competitions. The increase in members has caused an increase in the need for equipment and thus a need of something to house and transport their targets and other supplies to archery shoots.

Wakefield caught wind of the need and thought perhaps H.U.G.S would be able to help. H.U.G.S went above and beyond with their donation by donating money towards the partial purchase of a trailer (which now sports Southern Pioneer logo stickers) and the purchase of several youth bows for the club to have on hand for younger archery enthusiasts.

The H.U.G.S team is funded by Southern Pioneer Electric’s recycled materials. Any pieces of steel, aluminum or copper that have been taken out of service due to a repair or rebuild are recycled. Southern Pioneer Electric Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pioneer Electric Cooperative, is headquartered out of Ulysses.

Southern Pioneer Electric Company has local offices in Liberal and Medicine Lodge. Southern Pioneer Electric Company serves approximately 17,200 customers and operates in 10 counties and 34 communities. Southern Pioneer Electric Company’s service territory stretches east from Liberal to Medicine Lodge and north to Kingman and back west to Greensburg. Southern Pioneer Electric Company is dedicated to providing customers with safe and reliable electric service.
