During a work session last week, Seward County commissioners discussed what the county would like to accomplish in 2010.
Monday, the commission approved a list of goals for the remainder of the year, and that list was narrowed from several possibilities, according to information in the county’s agenda packet.
Those items came from areas such as the county’s political and civic involvement, lowering the local crime rate, an after school program, the need for a recreation or a community center, economic development, roads, promoting the City of Liberal’s 1-cent sales tax, the ongoing overall look of the fairgrounds and the county’s Web site.
The commission, according to the agenda packet, identified its top three issues as the Web site, having department head reports at each meeting and the look of the fairgrounds.
The board further identified three long-term goals as the county’s health insurance plan, the need for a community center and lowering the crime rate.
Monday’s approval included these goals for 2010 for the county commission:
o Develop an improvement plan for the Event Center/fairgrounds complex including:
b. Ag Building floor
c. Drainage of grounds
d. 4-H building
e. ADA bathrooms;
o Maintain/keep current the Seward County Web site;
o Provide informational reports to the board by department heads and funded agencies each board meeting;
o Work with the city and Leadership Enrichment and Development and integral agencies on a multi-generational community center;
o Work with the crime task force regarding youth prevention programs; and
o Educate county employees to raise awareness on the rising costs of health insurance and work with the county’s health insurance company on a wellness program to raise employee awareness.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the goals.
