Law enforcement officers received a report Thursday night that a subject wanted on an arrest warrant was seen in a passing vehicle, and a subsequent stop of the vehicle uncovered drugs and a gun which had been stolen earlier that evening.

Five people ended up being arrested as a result of investigating officers, according to a statement released Friday by Liberal Police Capt. Pat McClurg.

“On Thursday at about 6:12 p.m., a citizen reported the theft of a firearm from his vehicle at 911 Millwood Circle,” McClurg noted. “The investigating officer received a detailed description of the stolen gun.”

While that auto burglary was being investigated, officers received an alert from a county deputy.

“A Seward County Sheriff’s deputy alerted police officers to a moving vehicle with a subject wanted in connection with an active arrest warrant,” McClurg reported. “Officers stopped the vehicle in the 200 block of East 8th Street.”

McClurg said that’s when the first arrest was made.

“A 28-year-old female was taken into custody in connection with the active arrest warrant,” he noted.

“During a joint investigation with the Seward County Sheriff’s Office, a search of the vehicle was conducted,” McClurg said. “The firearm previously reported stolen was located and seized, as well as a quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia.”

That resulted in the arrest of a two males, 25 and 27, in connection with the stolen firearm, according to McClurg.

“A 22-year-old male and a 24-year-old female were taken into custody on drug related charges,” he added. “Affidavits have been forwarded to the Seward County Attorney for the filing of formal charges.”
