The Turpin Cardinals took Game 1 of their doubleheader Tuesday 6-1, then held off a late rally by the Tigers to get the sweep, 11-8.

Turpin headed into the bottom of the fourth inning of Game 2 with an 11-1 lead and looking to end the game by run-rule if they could hold the Tigers scoreless. At that point, Laverne had one hit off of Kyler Musgrave and one unearned run.

But Laverne rallied with one out, scoring six runs to make the game interesting at 11-7.

Laverne then added another run in the bottom of the fifth, and moved another to third. But Turpin made three straight plays in the infield to hold off the Tigers rally.

“Two big wins for us,” Cardinals manager Mario Mendoza said. “We found a way to get hold on in the second game. We still have to cut down on errors and left too many on base in Game 1. We hit the ball well in the second game and produced runs when we have the opportunity.”

In the first inning Musgrave hit a two-run single to score Jordon Lujan and Hunter Clark. Musgrave later scored to put Turpin up 3-0.

Matt Young hit a two-run single in the second as did Garrett Gross to put the Cardinals up 8-1 after two innings.

In the third, it was George Dominguez' turn with a two-run single that score Lujan and Musgrave, each with their third run scored of the game. Turpin added another in the top of the fourth to make it 11-1.

Musgrave got the win, giving up six hits, three walks, and striking out three.

Musgrave was 3-4 with 2 RBI and three runs scored. George Dominguez was 2-3 with 3 RBI, Jordon Lujan was 1-2 with a walk, and RBI and three runs scored. Hunter Clark was 2-4 with two runs scored, and Garrett Gross was 1-2 with 2 RBI.

In Game 1 Turpin needed just three hits to get six runs. The Cardinals took advantage of errant pitching that led to 11 walks.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the first, then led 4-1 after three innings. Turpin added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

Jordon Lujan was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Lujan was 1-1 with two walks, and RBI, and a run scored. Musgrave was 1-2 with a run scored, and Dominguez was 1-2.

Turpin (8-4) will host Tyrone, Thursday.
