Almost 20 years ago, local parents and baseball enthusiasts formed a competitive youth baseball program in Liberal, and the Liberal Cal Ripken League was born.
Now, fastpitch softball parents are trying to do the same for girls.
Liberal has had traveling youth teams in the past, but not an organized competitive league. The City of Liberal has filled the gap by providing a recreational league, but with some girls playing on traveling teams and others participating in the city program, the number of participants has been low.
The combined league will attempt to involve all softball players in an attempt to provide more competitive experience for girls at a younger age so they will be more prepared as they continue their softball careers in the high school program.
A meeting to discuss the league formation will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday at West Middle School.
The program will be open to girls between the ages of 7 and 12 as of Jan. 1, 2014.
The meeting is open to anyone. Players and parents are welcome to attend, and the group will also be looking for coaches in a variety of age divisions.
