HUGOTON – Shirley Joan Mills Popejoy, 80, died April 4, 2014. She was taken by respiratory failure in her home with her husband by her side.

She was born on July 25, 1933 to Daisy and OW Mills on the Mills Farm outside Hugoton.

She married Bernard Popejoy on June 19, 1949 and they were married for 64 years

She graduated from Hugoton High School in 1952 and immediately began the work she always considered her most important; caring for her family.

Her interests included family history and memory keeping.  She never hesitated to share stories and pictures with those around her.

She enjoyed watching and encouraging her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband; son, Dan Popejoy and his wife, Terri, Georgetown, Texas; daughter, Shari Popejoy Esposito and husband Vince, Spring Texas; grandchildren: Kim DeGarmo Oelke, Houston, Chris DeGarmo and wife, Liza, Austin, Liz Popejoy Gabel and husband David, Mechanicsburg, Penn., Kelli Schroeder Hall and husband, Jeff, Spring Texas, and Andrew Popejoy and his wife, Vicki, Waco Texas; 14 great-grandchildren, ages 2-21; sister, Janell Mills Burditt and husband Kenneth, Whispering Pines, N.C.; and brother, Doug Mills and wife Rita, Hugoton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers: Earl Mills, Jerry Mills and Don Mills.

• Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hugoton on Thursday with Pastor Jo Mead presiding.

Burial will be at the Hugoton Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
