The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs lost a close one and a blowout on the softball diamond to Lakin. Heights lost Game 1, 6-3, then lost Game 2, 16-3.
In Game 1 Heights took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, but Lakin fired back with three runs in the bottom half.
Both teams scored one more in the second, and after three innings the score was still 4-2 in favor of Lakin.
Lakin added a pair of runs in the fourth. Heights tried to rally in the fifth, but managed just one run, and both teams were held scoreless over the final two innings.
Heights outhit Lakin 14-6, but could not turn those hits into runs. The Lady Mustangs helped out Lakin by committing three errors, while Lakin committed just one. Lakin pitchers did not have a walk in the game.
Rachel Amerin took the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings. Amerin allowed five earned runs, five hits and five walks, and struckout six.
Viancy Jimenez was 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored; Danielle Sanchez was 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Celia Sanchez was also 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Dakoda Cox was 2-3 with a run scored, and Hannah Baldwin was 1-3 with an RBI.
Game 2 went south for the Lady Mustangs fast. After scoring two runs to lead off the top half of the first, Lakin answered with 16 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Game 2 starter Lexi Stark recorded just one out before she was pulled. Stark did not get much help as the Lady Mustangs committed eight errors that led to six unearned runs in the first inning.
Heights added one more run in the fourth, but that was as close as they would get in the run-rule shortened game.
Diana Carillo was 1-2 with a double and a stolen base; Celia Sanchez was 2-3 with a stolen base, Danielle Sanchez was 1-1 with two stolen bases, and Sara Eakes was 2-3 at the plate.
Heights (3-3) will look to rebound next Tuesday when the host Scott City.
