The Liberal City Commission had a record-fast special meeting Thursday to approve the levying of the half cent sales tax recently approved with Tuesday’s bond issue vote.
The meeting was called to order at 5:30. Mayor Joe Denoyer introduced Ordinance No. 4426 and the ordinance passed unanimously after a commission vote.
The vote took place Thursday as opposed to during Tuesday’s regular meeting due to the results of the bond issue vote not being available at the time of the meeting. After the successful vote, the next step for the city was to adopt the ordinance, which would provide for the half-cent sales tax. After the ordinance’s adoption, the city then has to notify the Department of Revenue to change the rate.
The new sales tax is scheduled to be implemented July 1.
Finance Director Chris Ford, who was present at the meeting, said that given the time of the vote, the Department of Revenue worked with the city
“However, we did have the need to adopt this as soon as possible in order for everything else to start flowing smoothly,” he said.
After the vote, the meeting was adjourned at 5:31.
