Every Class 5A school , except for one, will end the season with a loss.
Some just happen sooner than others.
For the Liberal Redskins, that loss came in the opening round of Sub-State to the Andover Trojans, 64-52.
The Trojans used a barrage of three-pointers in the first quarter to build a 15-9 lead, but the Redskins charged back for a 22-19 lead early in the second quarter.
It would be Liberal’s only lead.
Another three-pointer from Andover’s Kyle Malone tied the game, and Jobe Thomas hit 16 of 18 free throws, most of them in the fourth quarter, to prevent a Redskin rally.
Kowan Russell finished his Redskin career with a six-point fourth quarter and eight for the game.
Senior Bryce Johnson scored three, and the final senior, Bryce Johnson, scored two.
“I want to thank the seniors,” Liberal coach Drew Gruver said. “They are great kids. They worked hard all four years. I am happy I had the chance to coach them.”
Jade Cathey led the Redskins with 17 points, and Bryan Morris had eight.
After losing three seniors, Liberal will return starters Justin Andrade, Tyson Deaton, Cathey and Bryan Morris.
