With the first phase of design finished, architects from the Wichita-based Health Facilities Group are entering the next step in that area of the upgrade project to Southwest Medical Center.

Health Facilities Vice President David Wright said Thursday at  a joint meeting of the hospital’s board of trustees and the Seward County Commission that there are two more design phases on the project.

“Design development, where we get into designing your specific equipment and really making sure we understand the full details of the project, and the last phase is where we develop the technical documents and specifications that are used for subcontractors to bid off of,” he said.

Wright said that phase will be worked on for the next two to three months, and in the following three to four months, the firm will be finishing documents for the project.

“Part of the process we’re in right now is a selection process for the construction manager,” he said. “That process will culminate in some interviews later in the month.”

Wright said once a construction manager is selected, they will become part of the team, and the team will move forward together.

“While we’re developing the full set of documents, we’re going to develop some different packages throughout, so we can bid those packages early and start construction before we finish the drawings,” he said.

Wright said a request for proposal has been issued for bids on the project.

“I think we have six construction managers who have requested a request for proposal and are in the process of evaluating that,” he said.

Wright said proposals are scheduled to be received Wednesday, and Thursday, the list of construction managers will be narrowed to four.

“Those four will be short listed for an interview,” he said. “We plan to conduct those interviews on March 24 here at the hospital. We have until April 2 in the RFP to finalize the selection.”

As part of the team, the chosen construction manager will begin attending meetings and be part of the process through the rest of the design phase and through the completion of construction.
