Lady Redskins lose lead in 7th inning PDF Print E-mail

The Lady Redskins were only one out away from victory Friday, but Liberal could not record the final out in Johnson before Stanton County rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Lady Redskins a 10-9 loss.

Liberal dropped the opener 15-0 despite the return of pitcher Brittany Granger. After two weeks off the mound recovering from a finger injury, Granger struggled, walking six batters and beaning four others.

Liberal committed five errors in the loss.

In the second game, it was Stanton County’s starter who struggled early, and the Lady Redskins were abel to take advantage of three first inning walks and a double by Sara Arriaga to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Sarah Bayouth took the circle for the Lady Redskins and only gave up one run in the first.

Neither team scored in the second or third, but the Redskins expanded their lead with two hits and three runs to jump ahead 7-1.

But Stanton County responded with a big inning. The Lady Trojans took advantage of three Lady Redskin errors two score four runs and cut Liberal’s lead to 7-5.

The Lady Trojans jumped ahead in the fifth with three more runs.

Trailing 8-7, the Lady Redskins battled back with a run in the sixth to tie the game, and after Bayouth kept Stanton County scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, Liberal regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh.

Liberal’s defense faltered, and two errors and two hits allowed Stanton County to tie the game.

With two outs nd a runner on third, Stanton County hit a walk-off single by the shortstop, and the runner form third scored for the 10-9 win over the Lady Redskins.

Jordan Urban went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

Arriaga also had a double and two RBIs.

“It was encouraging to see us have chance to win it and we almost pulled it off,” Knott said. “It hurts to lose a close game that way, but we know deep down we can put a full game together. We will give it another try on Tuesday against Dodge City.”
