A head-on collision Sunday north of Liberal killed 2, including a teenager, and sent two to the hospital, according to a report by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
A 2011 Ford truck driven by Travis Ryan Burgess, 31, of Turpin, Okla., was southbound at 2:56 p.m. on U.S. Highway 83 at mile post 20.5 – or 15 miles north of Liberal, and according to the report, he “went left of center into northbound lane.”
A northbound 1994 Oldsmobile driven by Gabriela Cano, 32, of Hooker, Okla., tried to avoid the truck and swerved into the southbound lane. It was then Burgess swerved back into that lane and hit the Olds head-on.
Gabriela was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Brenneman Funeral Home.
Gabriela also had two passengers in her vehicle, 14-year-old Evelin Cano and 10-year-old Nayeli Cano, who were both transported to Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. According to the KHP, Evelin also died at the hospital. No further reports have been released on Nayeli’s condition.
Both Gabriela and Nayeli were wearing seat belts, but Evelin was not.
The driver of the Ford, Burgess, was also transported to SWMC for “possible injuries,” according to the KHP report. The report noted he was not wearing a seat belt.
