Local Mixed Martial Artist fans have found a favorite in Mario Muñoz.
The soft-spoken fighter has committed to the sport by dropping massive amounts of weight and has exhibited an uncanny ability to take punishment while waiting for his moment to deliver bone-crushing blows or forcing his opponents to tap out.
Last summer, Muñoz won the Summer Heat belt, and he will defend it Saturday against a quality opponent from Austin Texas — Carl Perry.
“Mario is a good representative of the sport,” event promoter Dave Rine said. “He is kind outside, but he is a brute inside. He is very mild mannered and well spoken. That is what you are looking for.”
Muñoz will end a night of fighting with his professional bout, and tickets are still available at Rine’s American Freestyle Karate. Advance tickets are $20, $30 at the door.
The Ag Building will open for seating at 5 p.m., and fights begin with pankration events at 7 p.m. followed by adult amateur and professional fights.
