The Liberal City Commission will be taking on a rather short agenda at its next meeting tonight with only two official items on the agenda up for discussion.

The first of the two agenda items will be an update from Ivanhoe Love Jr. and three other officers about the truancy program. They gave similar presentations at recent USD No. 480  Board of Education and Seward County Commission meetings about how the program is progressing. Each of the three truant officers will have a student with them to tell how the program has helped them since they started working with their respective officers.

The other item up for discussion during tonight’s meeting will be a tax increment financing (TIF) policy proposal. TIF is a method of financing public costs associated with a private development project. The commission agenda said TIF provides a means of encouraging public investment in underdeveloped areas, which will allow the city to use future property tax collections to finance development costs. Staff will be recommending the commission approve the proposal.

After discussion of the TIF proposal will be City Manager Mark Hall’s report, the items from commissioners and then approval of the vouchers. After the vouchers discussion is over, the meeting will adjourn.
