Dispatcher traffic by emergency responders mid-morning Tuesday noted an unidentified man had his foot cut off by a railroad car at County Road P and U.S. Highway 54. The initial calls were for a “pedestrian versus train” incident.

Seward County Emergency Management Supervisor Greg Standard confirmed earlier today the accident did occur, though he did not disclose specific injuries.

“Seward County Fire Department responded to a report of a 58-year-old man with a leg injury caused by a railroad accident at 8664 Road P,” Standard noted in a brief press release.

Further dispatcher traffic said the injured man was located at the west side of Arkalon Ethanol Plant, which sits on the northwest quadrant of the Road P and Hwy. 54 intersection.

That is also where the plant unloads grain rail cars and also fills ethanol tanker rail cars, though no details have been released.

The man did survive, according to Standard.

“One patient was transported by EMS to Southwest Medical Center alive and stable,” he noted. “The (Seward County) Sheriff’s office and (Union Pacific) railroad are investigating the incident.”
