A teenager was killed Sunday night when her car was hit head-on northeast of Liberal near the intersection of U.S. Highway 54 and Salley Road.

According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Victoria Alina Varela of Kismet, died at the scene of the accident.

Varela was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima eastbound on Hwy. 54 at 11:40 p.m. when a westbound 2012 Ford pickup, driven by 42-year-old James A. Dills, of Alamagordo, N.M., veered across the center line and struck Varela’s vehicle head-on at milepost 11 at County Road 7.

Dills was transported to Southwest Medical Center, and Varela was taken to Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal.

Dills’ truck came to rest in the eastbound lane, according to the report, while Varela’s car ended up in the eastbound ditch,

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to KHP.
