A Liberal woman died Saturday morning when her car was struck head-on by an SUV that had been reported to authorities only minutes before to be driving erratically.

Nayeli Gonzales, 22, Liberal, died after a southbound 2005 Chevy Tahoe on U.S. Highway 83 crossed the center line and struck her vehicle head-on, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

A 2-year-old boy was a passenger in Gonzales’ 2004 Mercedes-Benz, but he was not injured in the fatal crash.

At 8:29 a.m. Saturday, 911 dispatchers notified law enforcement via radio a person had reported erratic driving by someone in a white SUV in the southbound lane – at times. After several calls had gone out, the reporting party told dispatchers the SUV had struck another vehicle at 8:33 near the Cimarron River bridge at Mile Post No. 18.

The KHP report identified the driver of the SUV as Stacy Dawn Curry, 39, of Liberal. She was transported to Southwest Medical Center, according to the report, but her condition was unavailable.

All three were wearing their seatbelts, according to the report.
