By Dona Obholz, of Liberal

The 1st of August, I went to the recycle center as I do once a month. I was very surprised to find all the recycle containers gone and a note saying “Recycle Center Temporarily Closed” due to building damage. When I drove around to the  west side of the building, I did see damage to the building but the recycle containers were under the debris. It looked like the containers were put there first and then the building fell on them.

I consider myself a serious recycler and recycle cardboard, newspapers, colored and white paper, magazines, plastic, glass, cans and shredded paper. I really think it is a shame for Liberal to not step up and see what other cities do. I take my shredded paper (colored and white), vegetable cans and colored plastic to Garden City because Liberal doesn’t recycle it here.

When I was a teacher for USD 480, I started a recycling program at our school. We had containers for the students and teachers to recycle plastic bottles, cans, colored and white paper. Did I ever get things in the containers that shouldn’t have been there? Sure. Left over lunches, and dirty diapers. Did this stop me? No. I took the paper to Kansas City for other schools to get money for the paper. (My son had a doctor’s appointment in KC every month).

The I found out Garden and Dodge took colored and white paper, so I started taking it there. Also, when I was a teacher, I took my school children to tour the recycle center, and it really got my kids interested in recycling and they started bringing bottles and cans to school to recycle. The compactor was in the east building, and it would not have been affected by the damage to the west building.

I heard that Liberal was not bringing the recycling back because people kept putting the wrong items in the recycling container. If you check with Garden or Dodge, I bet they had the same problem before, but they didn’t close the recycling center.

Maybe Liberal could get new recycling containers with pictures and see what Garden City has a model our new containers after theirs

Can we please get the containers back so we can help Liberal stay “Green?”
