ULYSSES – Gladys Katherine Awtrey, 81, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Stormont-Vail Health Center in Topeka.  

She was born Aug. 25, 1927, to George and Katherine (Schimpf) Dorsch in La Junta, Colo.

She married W.H. “Gene” Awtrey Jan. 15, 1950, in La Junta.  He died Oct. 29, 2005.

She graduated from La Junta High School.  

She was a homemaker and helped her husband with the farm work.  

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses.

She enjoyed cooking and crafting.  

Survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Kay Bever and husband, Rick, Olathe, Sheila Rae Hachmeister, Topeka, and Eugena Gay Hess and husband, Alan, Fruita, Colo.; one stepson, Richard Awtrey and wife, Brenda, Caldwell; one sister, Mollie Rush, Fort Morgan, Colo.; six grandchildren, Aaron and Jason Hachmeister, Topeka, Lindsay O’Connor, Overland Park, Ashley Hess, Kearney, Neb., and Brady Hess, Omaha, Neb., and Wyatt Awtrey, Plano, Texas; three step-grandchildren, Lonnie, Cary and Gene Awtrey, all of Wichita; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Awtrey, Plano;  and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was also preceded in death by  one son, Wayne Awtrey, one brother, Alec Dorsch, and three sisters, Leah Stark, Bertha Lanza and Elma Swann.

o Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Wayne Flanders presiding.  

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.  

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Grant County Senior Center, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS  67880.
