Liberal firefighters put out the flames on a 1985 Buick LeSabre Thursday afternoon after the car caught fire in the 900 block of North Washington Avenue. Carlos Salazar-Booth, 16, a student at Liberal High School, was driving his brother, David Booth, 12, a student at Cottonwood Intermediate, home from school when he began to see smoke coming from the engine. Carlos immediately called his mother, Cindy, who called the fire department, as did a bus driver near Washington Elementary School who advised the brothers to get out of the car. According to Cindy, the car, which Carlos had received a month earlier, was totaled. Neither brother was injured in the incident. Daily Leader photos/Robert Pierce
