When the Dodge City Red Demons grabbed momentum Tuesday against the Redskins, they never let it go.
The end result was a double header sweep that left Liberal searching for a Western Athletic Conference win.
Dodge City terrorized the Liberal starting pitchers in a WAC double header, at one point hitting three home runs in an inning to sweep the Redskins 17-2, 12-0.
Liberal didn’t help its cause in the field, either, committing five errors in Game 1.
Austen Pitts took the mound for the Redskins in Game 1 and gave up seven runs in the first five innings.
But it was the sixth inning that proved to be fatal. The Red Demons scored 10 runs and chased Pitts off the mound.
Dustin Loftiss took over to record the final o ut of the inning, but the damage had been done.
The Redskins could not answer in the bottom half against a strong lefty, and Liberal lost 17-2.
Tyson Deaton took the mound for the Redskins in Game 2 and started with a scoreless inning.
Deaton gave up three runs in the second, but his inning of doom came in the third when the Red Demons put nine on the scoreboard. Dodge City had three home runs and two triples in the third.
Deaton was relieved by Brandon Granger who was able to shut the Red Demons down for the next two-and-a-third innings, but the 12-0 hole was too deep and the game was called after the fifth inning.
Liberal (5-7) will travel to Colby Monday for a non-conference match-up.
