Kansas had 61 winners in the Junior American Citizens Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Chairman Jacqualine Dunham of Plains sent 124 Kansas entries to South-Central Divisional judging, which includes six states. Eighty-one of these entries qualified for national judging. Of the 61 winners, 27 were first place and received $20 each; 20 were second place and received $15 each; 14 were third place and received $10 each; and three entries were honorable mention. Kansas’ students received $980 for their entries. All winners received certificates.
The JAC Contest was for students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Students could select from the categories of poster, stamp design, banner, photographic essay, poem, short story or community service to prepare an entry.  Each grade level was judged separately in every category with each grade further divided in special education, gifted, and regular students. Students were to follow the theme “America, Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Entries were to be individual work other than the banner category, which must be a group of three or more students.
