Around 7 this morning, Liberal Police Department dispatchers alerted officers of a stabbing victim at 400 South Pennsylvania. Within about a minute, an officer confirmed a woman was sitting outside the address in the street. According to a statement released by LPD Capt. Jason Ott, the woman was 44 years old, and she accused her 40-year-old boyfriend of stabbing her. Dispatchers warned responders at 7:05 that the alleged assailant was thought to be in the house still armed with a knife. Police quickly set up a perimeter at the home and placed crime scene tape around the intersection of Pennsylvania and Cedar. As police waited with drawn weapons, the woman who had been stabbed was transported to Southwest Medical Center in an ambulance. Meanwhile, a Spanish-speaking officer was trying to communicate with the alleged stabber. At 7:40, the Special Response Team had arrived at the scene and was preparing to breach the door of the house when an officer called in that another ambulance would be needed as the alleged assailant had stab wounds as well. The man was then taken into custody with reportedly three self-inflicted stab wounds in his abdominal area with a 5- to 6-inch blade knife. The ambulance departed with him at 7:42. Ott said an investigation is still under way. Daily Leader photo/Larry Phillips
