Hannah Rotolo scored nine first quarter points and LaTonya Gooden scored 22 to lead the Liberal Lady Redskins to an 81-50 win over Guymon, Okla., and a 2-0 start to the season.
The Lady Redskins had a preseason focus o n the Lady Tigers after losing to Guymon twice last season in close games.
Tuesday, it never was.
Liberal jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Guymon scored, and the defensive intensity of the Lady Redskins continued to cause the opposition havoc. Liberal converted turnovers into points and limited the Lady Tigers to one shot on most possessions.
The fast break offense of the Redskins appeared to take its toll late in the first half and in the second as the Liberal continued to pressure Guymon into mistakes and transition baskets.
“It was good to see girls come out and start 10-0,” Liberal coach Shane Stout said. “That took a lot of pressure off of us and let us play. We didn’t lose focus in the second half, either. We built the lead to 30 after the third.”
The Lady Redskins jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter and continued to build to a 43-19 halftime lead.
Eight Lady Redskins scored in the blowout win.
“We were definitely ready to play,” Stout said. “We still have to go down there, and it will be different.”
Gooden scored 22 points in the win, and Rotolo added 12. Kiara Cohens also had 12 in the win. MaKayla McPhail scored 11, Tameka Sanchez had nine, and Brianna Lucero pitched in eight .
