ULYSSES – Mary Velasquez,  76, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.  

She was born Aug. 21, 1932, to Miguel and Ynes Casas (Nunez) Yruegas at Knox County, Texas.

She married Raul Velasquez May 21, 1957, in Benjamin, Texas.  He survives.

She was a homemaker.  She was a substitute cook for USD No. 214.  

She was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church and the Alter Society.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, crocheting, quilting, flowers and gardening.

Other survivors include four sons, Larry and wife, Yolanda, Raul Jr. and wife, Lorena, Marty R. and Robert A. and wife, Linda; one daughter, Yolanda M. Marquis and husband, Frank, all of Ulysses; one brother, Rudy Yruegas and wife, Hortensia, Visalia, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Larry P. Velasquez and wife, Anna, Brooke A. Velasquez, Issac B. Velasquez and wife, Stephanie, Wesley M. Velasquez, Jordan R. Velasquez, Nicholas A. Velasquez, Kelsie D. Marquis and Anthony S. Marquis; two great-grandsons, Damion S. Marquis and Skylar Renshaw; and one niece, Toney Hernandez and husband, Victor, Ulysses. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Joe Yruegas; half-brothers, Antonio Nunez, Desmond Nunez, John Nunez and Ben Nunez; half-sisters, Catalina Nunez Sanchez and Susana Nunez Holguin; and one great-granddaughter, Alica A. Velasquez.

o Vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, both at Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen presiding. 

Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.  

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home.  

Memorials are suggested to the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church Scholarship Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS  67880.
