The renovations that will transform Light Park into a 24-acre new and improved park with something for everyone is coming right along.
Director of Public Works Joe Sealey said although there has been a few delays, mostly caused by weather, progress is being made.
“After getting a delayed start, we kind of got shut down with the weather again, but we are making progress,” Sealey said. “We kind of focused about getting the drainage and stuff done around the pool and the extra cement work that we needed to do. We got that done.”
There is much more cement work to be done, however, city officials are waiting for Abbott Construction to begin construction of a specific portion of the park before they continue.
“We still have quite a bit of sidewalk to do, but we are waiting on the contractor to get started on the skatepark, pavilion and multi-purpose court,” Sealey said.
Included in the Light Park project is a stretch of sidewalk that will reach from 15th Street to Tucker Road. This will allow those on foot or in wheelchairs much easier access to businesses on the north end of town.
“That sidewalk will be part of this project as well,” Sealey said. “We haven’t gotten the paperwork back on that, yet, so until we do, I can’t really say when we can start – but it will be soon.”
A sidewalk of this nature has been something citizens of Liberal have desired for some time, Sealey said.
“That is one thing we have had many requests on,” Sealey said. “You see a lot of people walking along side of the road going back and forth in that direction. The people with the wheelchairs certainly let it be known that they would be very appreciative of that once we get that done.”
With much of the work on Light Park being done in-house, Sealey is unsure of a completion date.
“Remember, I’m the guy that missed the opening date of the pool three times in a row,” he said with a chuckle. “So I don’t think you want to ask me about any dates. I just don’t know, I’m sorry.”
