PLAINS – E. Maxine “Mitzi” Wells, 87, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at Meade District Hospital.

She was born Feb. 12, 1923, to Ben and Alta (Batman) Rickers in Plains.  

She married Lewis Miller Wells Dec. 21, 1947, in Plains. He died Oct. 9, 2009.

As a young girl, she attended the Plains school system, graduating from Plains High School. Upon her graduation, she furthered her education by attending Southwestern College in Winfield, receiving her degree in high school education and business. 

After her graduation, she taught school in Wichita and later in Fowler. She assisted her husband in business at the Wells Clothing and Gifts that they owned and operated for more than 40 years.

She was a member of the Untied Methodist Church; Methodist Women’s League; Order of the Eastern Star; and the Ladies Lions Club, all of Plains; and an investment club of Liberal.  

She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by one son, Jeffrey Wells and wife, Margie, Plains; one daughter, Janis Intelhouse and husband, Steve, Hanover, Va.; two granddaughters, Candice and Crystal; and six great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Alex, Elizabeth, Desirae, and A.J.

She was also preceded in death by  one stepbrother, Roy Krause; and one sister, Edith Reimer.

o Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Plains, with the Rev. Steve Morgan presiding.  

Burial will be at the Plains Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary of Meade.  

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
