Denise Hagemann has been a cancer survivor for 30 years, and after being part of Seward County’s Relay For Life committee for 12 years, she will be heading up this year’s event.
The theme for this year’s relay is “Rock and Roll Over Cancer,” and the new chairman explained what some of the committee will be doing to promote that theme Friday at Blue Bonnet Park.
“We’re hoping to have our chairman and anybody else who wants to dress up in one of the decades of rock and roll,” she said. “I’ll be dressed as the ’60s. Two of my chairman will be in the ’50s.”
The relay committee has hosted a variety of fundraisers this year, and Hagemann said so far, about $5,000 has been raised. Friday’s event will start at 7 p.m. with a celebration, along with a birthday party for survivors.
“We’ll do the luminary at 10 o’clock,” she said. “We’re going to try to show some of the names of the survivors. We’re also doing a silent auction and raffle tickets.”
One of the prizes in the raffle is a pork bundle, which Hagemann said contains 1.5 pounds of bacon and three pounds of pork loin.
“They can get those tickets by contacting me or Brenda Mallory,” she said. “It’s $1 a ticket or six tickets for $5.”
Hagemann said the raffle is scheduled to take place around 11:30 p.m. She said one of the prizes for the silent auction is a signed and framed 19- by 16-inch picture of basketball players Blake and Taylor Griffin.
“He’s an OU player who was the No. 1 overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers,” she said of Blake. “We have a framed 5 by 7 colored photo of Blake Griffin as a McDonald’s All-American. We have somebody from Sears that donated 10-inch hedge shears.”
Hagemann said the Relay committee would like to raise $30,000 this year, and Southwest Medical Center is helping that cause.
“At the hospital, Friday is Jean Day,” she said. “People are buying the $5 tickets, and that will be donated to Relay For Life. If any businesses want to do something like that, that would be awesome. They can notify me for that.”
