A revamped Liberal line-up made the trip to Colby Saturday for a wrestling tournament and returned with a 5-2 record and a seventh place finish.

Victor Cruz and Tyler Sutherland turned in 7-0 performances for the Redskins.

Nate Davis, who went 8-0 at Rio Rancho, N.M., earlier, did not travel with the team. He took his ACT test Saturday.

The Redskins went 1-2 Friday before stringing four consecutive wins Saturday.

“I was a little disappointed on Friday,” Liberal coach Mike Pewthers said. “But I got to looking at the team we took. We only had four guys with varsity experience from last year, so that’s not too bad.”

Liberal did not have a wrestler meet weight at the 103-pound category and gave up six points in each match.

The Redskins lost to Pine Creek, Colo., 48-27, defeated Ray, Colo.,

52-19 and lost to Scott City 38-30 Friday.

Saturday the Redskins knocked off St. Francis, 45-30, Oakley, 66-11, Hutchinson, 48-36, and Good-land, 31-27.

“I felt good after we were done,” Pewthers said. “We will probably have five or six changes in the line-up before our tournament.”

The Tascosa tournament has been canceled. Liberal’s next action will be in the Big House in the Southwest Classic, Jan. 9-10.

Eleven teams will compete for the tournament title.

“We have to concentrate on getting off our back,” Pewthers said.  “We need to get in better shape.”

The team will get a break two days before and three days after Christmas, and then Pewthers plans to work through the New Year to prepare for the Southwest Classic.
