Imagine building a house without a hammer and nails, or completing a report without paper and pen or a computer. No matter what your job is or how well you are trained, it’s almost impossible to complete most jobs today without the right tools.  Yet every year, hundreds of Liberal school children go to school without the “tools” (pens, pencils, paper, back packs) they need to succeed.
As the school year draws closer and school supplies begin appearing on retailers shelves, Kansas Children’s Service League’s Liberal community council invites citizens to join the “Tools for School” supply drive by donating school supply items. Items will be collected through Aug. 22, and will be delivered to the USD No. 480 district office for distribution to teachers for students who need them.
Kansas Children’s Service League provides the Head Start program in Liberal which helps prepare more than 100 income eligible children (ages 0-5 years) for kindergarten. The league’s Liberal Community Council is responsible for planning the Red Stocking Breakfast in December and provides input on programs and services needed in Liberal.
“The Liberal Community Council is an outstanding group of volunteers that is really passionate about helping children and families in Liberal. Following the first Red Stocking Breakfast in 2005, the council wanted to do something that benefitted Liberal children and began the ‘Tools for School’ supply drive,” said Lisa Knoll, Development Manager for KCSL. “The council recognized that many children start school without supplies each year and wanted to do something to help those children be successful.”
Donated school supplies may be dropped off at any Liberal First National Bank location, including the FNB Money Mart inside Wal-Mart, KSMM/La Mexicana, KSCB/The Legend and Walgreens. In addition, the following churches will also serve as donation locations this year, Faith Tabernacle, First Christian Church, First Southern Baptist Church First United Methodist Church, First Southern Baptist Church, Friends Church, South Church of God and St. Paul United Methodist Church. The drive will run from now through Aug. 22.
Donations of gift cards and/or checks may be sent to Lisa Knoll, KCSL, 1517 Fulton Terrace, Garden City, KS 67846.
