VIRGIL A. SHEPARD

JOHNSON – Virgil Amos Shepard, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at his home in Johnson.  

He was born Jan. 14, 1921, to C.A. and Margaret (Ralstin) Shepard in Cullison.

He married Faleta Parker Jan. 1, 1941, in Stanton County. She survives.

He was a graduate of Johnson High School in 1939.

He was a farmer. He was a World War II veteran serving as a machine gun crewman in the United States Marine Corp.  

He was a member of the rodeo club, St. Augustine Rough Riders, served on the 4-H Building Board, Stanton County Extension Council, a life member of VFW Post No. 3684 in Johnson and a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.  

He was a high school sports fan, enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Lucky 4 Square Dance Club.  He and Faleta were also chosen as the Pioneer Couple of the Year in 2004.    

Other survivors include one son, Steve Shepard and wife, Glenda, Johnson; one daughter, Toni Hoskinson, Linn Valley; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oscar and Cecil Shepard; and three sisters, Sylvia Butcher, Ina Nafziger and Elsie Rouse.

o Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson with the Rev. Don Hasty presiding.  

Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson with military rites performed by VFW Post No. 3684.  

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the donor’s favorite charity in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
