• Daily Leader staff report
A two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon in Beaver County, Okla., sent a Liberal man to Southwest Medical Center.
Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 2009 Chevy driven by Kade William Goodwin, 18, of Turpin, Okla., was westbound on a county road in Beaver County six miles north and three miles west of Turpin, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
At the same time, Marino D. Velazquez, 48, of Liberal, was driving a 1984 Chevy pickup northbound on another county road, when both vehicles approached an unmarked intersection at the same time.
It was then, the OHP said, that Goodwin’s vehicle struck Velazquez’s. The report stated that Velazquez failed to yield to Goodwin.
Velazquez was taken to SWMC, where he was admitted with internal trunk and arm injuries. He is listed in stable condition. Goodwin was not injured in the accident.
Seat belts were equipped and in use in both vehicles, according to the OHP.
Monday crash injures Plains woman
In another crash earlier in the week, a Plains woman was injured when the pickup she was riding in hit a semi Monday evening that was turning off U.S. Highway 54 one-mile west of Plains.
Bobby Schleicher, 32, of Webster, Wis., was westbound around 7:45 p.m. on Hwy. 54 in a 1998 Kenworth semi when he slowed to turn right on Ohio Street. A 1994 Ford pickup driven by 60-year-old Juan Antonio M. Delatorre, Plains, tried to pass the semi on the right and hit the side of the rig, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Delatorre’s passenger, Josefina Martinez, 64, was injured in the incident and taken to Meade County Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
All were wearing seat restraints, according to the report.
