Did it feel good for those of us who watched Ulysses beat Liberal four times in a row just a few years ago to see Liberal put 40 on the board?
Yes, it did.
For three of those four games, the Redskins appeared to be trying to keep the Tigers in the game, and Ulysses eventually won.
As the father of the quarterback for two of those games, the last of the four was the hardest to take when the Redskins had a seven-point lead and Joe Bach was just stopped short of the goal line on fourth down. With less than three minutes to play, Ulysses went for it on fourth down at their own 4 yard line, and a waggle pass went 96 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers went for two, and Liberal lost by a point.
The only drama at the end of Friday’s game was how many more plays until freshman Britton Abbott will take the field.
Liberal dominated from the beginning, and at half there was little discussion of the outcome with the Redskins holding a 24-0 lead and Ulysses being held to five first downs.
The Redskins were clearly the better team form the skill position players to the linemen.
Ulysses had Josh Jarnigan, but he wasn’t enough by himself.
Liberal had Superman Jade Cathey who showed tremendous improvement at wide receiver over last year.
Cathey not only used his size to his advantage Friday night, the 6-foot, 5-inch senior used skill. He timed his jumps, he battled for balls.
And he won every single time.
He was also flagged for excessive celebration for diving across the goal line for a touchdown, but I’ll give him a pass just this once. Liberal needed a win, they needed a big win, and they needed to show some emotion. If I was a few years younger, I might have done a tumble roll myself (but after watching KSCB sideline reporter Rick Potts do a little dance, maybe not).
So the Tiger’s claws have been removed from the Redskins backs, whether this team had anything to do with those previous games or not. As the saying goes, once a Redskin, always a Redskin, which means we are our past, present and future.
And there are a few more demons to exorcise this year. I believe this team has the tools to do it.
From Panthers to Buffaloes, the Redskins are on the hunt. They seem hungry, they have the talent, and now they have an opening win.
