L&T staff report

While the Seward County Board of Trustees rejected the recommendation of hiring a new athletic director recently, they also created a second and third athletic opening by releasing Saints basketball coach Bryan Zollinger along with his assistant Patrick Nee, acording to sources.

Zollinger coached 10 seasons at Seward and had a 218-85 record prior to this season.

Zollinger coached the Saints to five Jayhawk Conference titles and reached the Region VI semi-finals seven times, the finals three times and Region VI championships twice.

Zollinger led the Saints to third in the nation at the NJCAA National Tournament in 2014.

Zollinger was recognized as Jayhawk West Coach of the year five times.

This year, the Saints turned in a 9-22 season and lost in the first round of the Region VI Tournament.

As of press time, the college had not released a statement on Zollinger’s dismissal nor had they provided any guidance on how the position would be filled.

Without a head basketball coach or an athletic director, the athletic department has never been as leaderless. For decades, the guiding light of the department was Galen McSpadden, but he resigned as athletic director in December. It was not made clear if his resignation was voluntary or requested by school officials.

With no athletic director, the department is operated by President Dr. Ken Trzaska.
