Obituary



altLawrence E. Owens, 80, died Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.  

He was born Feb. 17, 1937 to Bessie Owens in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

He married Katherine Cohens Dec. 8, 1989 in Liberal. She survives.

He graduated from ICS Newport Pacific High School, where he obtained his GED, in 1998.   

He worked at Stu Emmert’s in the body shop for 17 years. 

He also worked as a truck driver for Yellow Freight for 20 years, and then for the Seward County Road and Bridge Department, where he retired after 35 years of service.  

He was chairman deacon, assistant treasurer and Sunday School Teacher and teacher of men’s layman class at New Community Baptist Church. 

He was also a master with the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include sons, Lafayette Owens (Shawkrice), Des Moines, Iowa, and Robert James Jr., Ponca City, Oklahoma; nine daughters: Asondias “Boo” Johnson, Arlington, Texas, Cynthia Owens, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Audrea Leisa Owens, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Lonce Etta (Tudy) Owens, Arlington, Texas, Marie Holman, Smyrna, Georgia, Nettie Lee James, Liberal, Connie Lashell James, Topeka, Petita (Tina) James, Wichita, and Debra Wilburn (Luster), Olathe; special granddaughter, Kiffany Stevenson, Liberal; 27 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother; five brothers; and sister, Geraldine Montgomery. 

• Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at the New Community Baptist Church in Liberal with Pastor Timothy McCauley presiding.  

Burial will follow at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal. 

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at Brenneman Funeral Home in Liberal. The family will be present for the wake from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. 

Memorial contributions may made to the Lawrence Owens Memorial Fund, in care of Brenneman Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Liberal, KS 67901.
