The JV tennis team from Liberal traveled to Ashland for their last tournament of the year. There were six teams present at the tournament: Ashland, Liberal, Kiowa County, Meade, Meade, South Central.
No. 1 singles Jesse Piper went 0-3 for the day and received sixth place
No. 2 singles Vicky Calderon went 1-4 for the day and received fifth place
No. 1 doubles team Melissa Alvarado and Chantal Desourmaux had won all of their matches when they took the court against Meade's Taylor Finke and Hope Harshberger.
The match began just as the host team turned on the lights. the Liberal girls had a very decisive match beating Meade 6-2.
These girls came home with a gold medal.
No. 2 Doubles team of Kim Vanley and Tania Sarabia began playing at the same time the No. 1s did. They also played against Meade but were not as successful.
They were beaten 6-2 and, but came away with a third-place honor.
“It was a great tournament to end our season,” Liberal junior varsity coach Lynn Knowles said. “The girls have improved and even though some did not come away with the wins they had fought so hard for, they had excellent serves and I loved seeing some of the improved backhands.”
