Tyson McGuire didn’t play it safe at the Western Athletic Conference Track Meet Thursday in Dodge City, and his risks paid off with a championship.

McGuire moved Austin Mullens to the long jump for the first time all season, pulled him from the 4x400 meter relay, and also put Mullens in the 200 meter dash. Liberal still won the 4x400 meter relay, and Mullens took second in his first-ever long jump competition and he won the 200 meter dash.

Liberal’s Jesse Alvarado also had a personal best in the triple jump, adding five feet to his previous best to earn a third-place finish after entering the day as the seventh seed in the event.

The additional points pushed the Redskins to 112, topping Garden City’s 93 to earn the WAC title.

Mullens’ strong day earned him the WAC Track Male Athlete of the Year.

“This was absolutely a total team effort,” McGuire said. “We needed to stop Garden and Dodge from scoring point sin a lot of different events, and they stepped up and put themselves in great positions.”

The Lady Redskins had a slow start and fell to the bottom of the standings early, but the fought back late and moved up to fourth.

The Redskins will travel to Goddard May 19 for the regional track meet. The top four finishers in each event will advance to the state meet.
